Advanced ATV (12 hours)
This course will introduce the student to proper use of an all terrain vehicle (ATV) and these of them in search and rescue. Safety and proper riding techniques will be the number one priorities. Training will include: safe riding and maneuvering techniques for various types of terrain, traversing over obstacles, use of winches on ATVs, packaging victims for ATV transport. PPE shall include: helmet, safety goggles or safety glasses, gloves  sturdy boots, (no tennis shoes) knee pads and elbow pads. Students must be at least 18 years old.

Aerial - Maintenance (16 hours)

This course will list and detail the various systems on an aerial and detail methods and procedures to be used to maintain and service these systems.  This included cables, hydraulic systems, stabilization units, electric systems, turntable devices, breathing air systems and the water ways on such units.  The course will detail maintenance on each type of aerial apparatus. Students must be at least 18 years old.

Aerial Operations - Introduction (16 hours)
This course is designed to introduce personnel to various types of aerial fire apparatus and their applications to emergency operations.  It will include job and individual performance issues; how to identify various types of aerial apparatus features of the design and application of aerials and elevating platforms.  It will also review unsafe acts as it relates to weather and terrain in placement and use of aerials.  It will also review unsafe acts as it relates to driver operator errors. Students must be at least 18 years old.

Arson Specialty (16 hours)
This course is designed for advanced fire investigators who have already obtained the basic fundamentals of fire investigation. It will provide the student training to gain advanced knowledge in areas of: role of investigator, determining cause & origin, gathering evidence & report writing, courtroom testimony & psychological profiles, fire law & case management, proper documentation, fire scene photography, interviewing techniques along with resource management. Investigator will understand his/her role in a fire investigation & be able to successfully operate in that role.

Basic Arson (16 hours)
This course is designed to provide training in new and advanced techniques and emerging topics related to fire and arson investigation.

Boat Operations (18 hours)
This course has been developed using the National Fire Academy Fire Service Course Design model. It is to assist Fire, Rescue and Law Enforcement Agencies with qualification and certification under NFPA 1006, Rescue Technician Professional Qualifications.  The course is to boats what Emergency Vehicle Driver is to apparatus. Participants will spend 10-20% of time in the classroom and 80-90% of time on the water, learning the proper operation of the craft. Topics covered include NC Boating Laws, navigation, trailering inspections, launch & recovery, boat operations in various environments including static water and inland flooding, man over board & self rescue, waterborne search operations including dragging and dive operations. Students must be at least 18 years old.

Bus Extrication (18 hours)
This course covers detailed guidelines and operational tactics for extrication scenarios involving various types of buses. Design characteristics, hazards and mitigation techniques will be discussed and applied.  Students should be well versed in basic extrication techniques and the use of hand tools and power tools. PPE shall include: helmet, gloves, safety goggles or safety glasses, bunker gear or coveralls or long sleeve BDUs. Students must be at least 18 years old.

Cell Tower Rescue (20 hours)
This course covers industrial standards safety procedures with regards to operating around and on a tower. Topics include construction material and configurations Students will be taught how to recognize and mitigate hazards associated with towers such as electrocution and entanglement. Other topics include rescue equipment, knots and hitches and rescue rigging systems. Students will be challenged with various live action scenarios while working at extreme heights. Students should be well versed and confident in rope rescue skills. Students uncomfortable working at heights exceeding one hundred feet or have medical conditions that be may aggravated by working such heights should not enroll in this course. This course is physically challenging.  Students shall provide the appropriate PPE and rope rescue equipment to include helmets, gloves, eye protection, and full body protection outerwear. Students shall also provide their own Class II or III harness, 6 carabineers, 4 prussic slings (8mm) and an approved descending device. Students must be at least 18 years old.

Driver Operator - Introduction Class (16 hours)
This class covers the job or individual requirements for pump operators and will detail the safe operation of the vehicle. Subjects will include: pump anatomy, pump panel and engine gauges, relief gauges, transfer valves, and basis pump set-up. This is a technical class with minimal hands-on applications and is intended for students with little or no experience with operating pumps. Students must be at least 18 years old.

Driver Operator - Service Testing of Pumps (16 hours)
This course will explain and demonstrate the proper methods and procedures used to test fire service pumping apparatus for service testing, Underwriter's Laboratory certification, a three hour service test, the acceptance test and other testing and priming tests required for fire service pumps.  The course will explain how 100%, 70%, and 50% capacity tests are performed and demonstrate mathematical calculations related to service testing.

Emergency Vehicle Driver (20 hours)
This course deals with the safe operation of emergency vehicles, driving skills, legal implications of emergency driving and departmental standard operating procedures.  This course is a stand-alone certification and is also a prerequisite to Driver Operator certification by the North Carolina Fire Rescue Commission.  Departments sending students to this course should bring a truck from their department.  Students must be at least 18 years old.

Fire Alarm and Communications (15 hours)
This course will allow for the student to complete objectives related to fire alarms and communications for Firefighter I and II. This course will introduce the student to the use of communication equipment and procedures for receiving and transmitting multiple alarms and the actions required upon receipt of these alarms.

Fire Department Orientation and Safety (21 hours)
This course will enable the firefighter to become aware of the advanced operations of the department and understand their position in the organization from a more detailed perspective.  Course topics will also include a review of advanced safety regulations and the firefighter's responsibility to comply with those regulations and a review of the elements of an advanced departmental safety program and the advanced hazards related to fire protection. Students must be at least 18 years old.

Helicopter Operations in Search and Rescue (16 hours)
This specialized course will instruct students in the use of helicopter services in search management and rescue support roles, emphasizing how and when to integrate helicopters into search and rescue operations, aerial search techniques, coordination with ground operations and command, and the role rescuers must play in safe helicopter operations. Detailed instruction will focus on helicopter flight dynamics, proper communications, establishing, marking and managing landing zones, guiding and landing helicopters, loading, unloading and balancing helicopters, and handling on-board emergencies. Students will fly an actual aerial search mission and will receive a course certificate upon successful completion. In addition students will learn about thermal imaging and night vision devices and how this technology can be utilized to greatly enhance locating victims in various circumstances and improve rescuer safety.  Students must be at least 18 years old. In addition students will learn about new innovative technology regarding the use and success of night vision technology and how it impacts the success rate of searches, especially night searches. An additional $55.00 flight fee will be charged for student flight time (fuel & flying costs) and is to be prepaid with college registration fee.

ICS-300 (16 hours)
Developed by the Secretary of Homeland Security, the National Incident Management System integrates effective practices in emergency response into a comprehensive national framework for incident management. The NIMS will enable responders at all levels to work together more effectively and efficiently to manage incidents no matter the cause, size or complexity, including catastrophic acts of terrorism and disasters. State and local agencies and organizations must adopt the NIMS to be eligible for federal preparedness assistance by FY 2005. In this course the student will cover the organizational structure and how it is staffed. ICS positions and their responsibilities will be discussed and the information flow in the organization. Organizational development and staffing are of primary concerns. Implementing and controlling resources to the incident will also be covered. Upon completion, students should be able to implement and operate within the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

ISAR (18 hours)
This course was developed by NASAR designed to provide knowledge concerning the general responsibilities, skills, abilities and the equipment needed to perform at search and rescue missions. This coursed is based around rural and wilderness environments. Students shall supply basic PPE and basic personal equipment used for rope rescue operations. PPE shall be helmet, gloves, safety goggles or safety glasses, sturdy boots plus basic personal equipment used for rope rescue operations.

Ladders I (15 hours)
This course will allow the student to complete the related objectives for ladders for Firefighter 1 and 2. This class will develop skills in ladder carries and raises while working as part of a team. Students will learn proper climbing techniques while utilizing a variety of ground ladders up to 35 feet. . PPE shall include helmet, gloves safety goggles or safety glasses. Students must be at least 18 years old.

This class involves the student participating in a live burn of a structure for realistic fire service training.  All training should be conducted in accordance with NFPA 1403.

Managing Company Tactical Opertaions (12 hours)
This course is designed to develop a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities o f a Company Officer in preparing their company for incident operations. In addition, to clarify the transition from firefighter to company officer and the new roles relating to leadership and safety. This course is designed for company officers, acting company officers, or senior firefighters responsible for the management of a single fire company at an emergency incident. Officers who are responsible for company readiness, personnel safety, and leadership as it relates to company operation are encouraged to take this course.

Mantracking - Basic Course (15 hours)
This specialized class will cover intermediate man tracking techniques useful in search operations and management.  A night session will be held on Saturday night.  Required equipment for class: cap or hat, boots, clothing suitable for woodland operations, flashlight, canteen, small pocket mirror and minimum 48-inch walking stick for the Saturday night session

Mayday (18 hours)
This course is design to educate the firefighter in identifying situations where a firefighter is put in harms way requiring immediate emergency action including the activation of a Mayday alert. Situations discussed will include a lost firefighter, a firefighter trapped or pinned by falling debris, a fire fighter falling through a floor and a firefighter entangled by obstructions such as wire.  This is a labor intensive course with the focus on hands-on application. Students shall provide firefighter PPE to include Turn-Out gear, an SCBA and one spare bottle. Students must be at least 18 years old.

Pediatric Emergencies for Prehospital Providers (16 hours)
Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) represents a complete source of prehospital medical information for the emergent care of infants and children. Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, PEPP is an exciting curriculum designed specifically to teach prehospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children.

Power Saw Safety (12 hours)
This course follows guidelines established by the NC Forestry Service for the safe operation of chainsaws and appropriate procedures for felling trees. Topics include: OSHA and ANSI safety standards, proper PPE, maintenance, carrying and operating a saw. This is a labor-intensive course. Students shall provide appropriate PPE including appropriate clothing (full body protection), helmet, leather gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, leather boots and chaps. Students must be 18 years old.

RT General - Helicopter Transport (6 hours)
This course will instruct rescuers in the criteria to be used to request air-medical helicopter transport, procedures for packaging a patient for helicopter transport, criteria for requesting NC National Guard hoist-equipped helicopters for patient extraction, procedures for packaging a patient for hoist extraction by helicopter, and how to setup a safe landing zone (LZ) for day or night landings, and proper signaling techniques, including hand signals, to assist a pilot with making a safe landing and take-off from an LZ.

RT General – Incident Planning (6 hours)
This course will instruct a rescuer in the necessary elements of a successful site survey, the factors a rescuer must know to effectively perform a scene “size-up”, hazards to rescuers and their consequences and hazard assessment, how to implement an operational plan or incident action plan, and the responsibilities of command and the primary functions of operation plan officers.

This course will teach rescuers stabilizing patients and several methods to move these patients to a point of safety. Methods will include the inclined drag, inclined carry, blanket drag, extremities carry, chair carry, spine-board lift & carry, and placement of a patient on a gurney.

Rt General PPE (12 hours)
This class will present to the Rescue Technician the need for and use of personal protective equipment to enable the rescuer to perform his/her duties in a safe and responsible manner, and consider the risk verses benefit concept. Physical characteristics of rescuers, stress, endurance and the limitations of equipment will be discussed. Types of personal floatation devices will be covered. Students must be at least 18 years old.

RT Ropes and Lowers (21 hours)
This class will present to the Rescue Technician safe and effective methods of rescue in elevated and below grade environments using ropes, knots and rope related equipment. Mechanical advantage, anchors, anchoring techniques and stress loads will be covered for  situations in below ground, confined space, agricultural settings involving grain silos and bins, river crossing and many more emergency scenes.  Riggings and raises for safely and successfully moving patients from urban and wilderness environments will be discussed. Students must be at least 18 years old.

RT VMR - Equipment (21 hours)
This class will introduce the Rescue Technician to the operation and function of various tools and equipment commonly used in vehicle and machinery rescue. The characteristics of Light Rescue, Medium Rescue and Heavy Rescue Vehicles will be covered. Up-righting and stabilization of vehicles and machinery including cars, trucks,
agricultural equipment so that rescue may be completed safely and efficiently by the use of cribbing, jacks, airbags, chains and various extrication tools will be covered. The use of fire extinguishers, including their classes, ratings and safe use will be discussed.  Students must be at least 18 years old.

RT VMR - Extrictation (21 hours)
This class will present new technologies in vehicle construction, which present hazards for rescue personnel, such as crumple zones, bumper systems, air bags/side impact protection systems, and hybrid vehicles. The construction of buses will be covered as it relates to rescue, including access points, structural components, fuel systems, and emergency exits. Features of machinery, as found in tractors, forklifts, crawlers, and other heavy machinery will be discussed as will victim removal from this type of heavy equipment. Students must be at least 18 years old.

RT VMR - PPE (11 hours)
This class will present to the Rescue Technician the various types of Personal Protective Equipment that are considered appropriate for use at vehicle and machinery accidents. Self Contained Breathing Apparatus maintenance, operations and features will be covered. Donning, doffing and wearing techniques will be discussed to ensure that each rescuer is comfortable working in various rescue environments.  Students must be at least 18 years old.

RT VMR – Incident Planning (9 hours)
This course will stress the importance of pre-planning for any incident, factors for scene “size-up”, how to implement an on-scene operational or incident action plan, types of on-scene hazards to rescuers and how to assess them, and the primary responsibilities and functions of command at rescue scenes. Students must be at least 18 years old.

S-130/S-190 (16 hours)
This course is designed for the rural fire department firefighter as a supplement to his/her regular training program as outlined in NFPA pamphlet 1001. This course is designed for both the firefighter with little experience and the firefighter with experience in wild-land fires, who are not full time wild-land firefighters and are limited to small unit initial attack units.

This course will cover objectives related to Salvage for Firefighter I and II.

Underwater Search & Recovery (20 hours)
This course is designed to teach intermediate and advanced skills in underwater search and recovery.  Students will use SCUBA with communications and surface supplied air with communications.  Students will work from both shore and support boat and will use lift and extrication equipment. Air fills will be provided at no extra cost.  Prerequites: Applicants must follow all NAUI Scuba Requirements. Possess at least a “Scuba Diver or Open Water” certification card (c-card).  This c-card will be checked on the first day of the course, no c-card = no class. Applicants will be required to sign a NAUI “Release of Liability, Waiver or Claims, Express Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement” at the start of the course. Applicants will be required to fill out a NAUI “Medical Evaluation and Physician Approval Form” at the start of the course. The NAUI “Medical Evaluation and Physician Approval Form” is provided to each applicant prior to the start of the course.  Look over the questions, if you answer “yes” to any of the questions, you “must” have a “Physician Approval” to participate in this course.  Each applicant is required to provide his/her own scuba equipment, below is a minimum requirements:
o Mask and Snorkel
o Booties and Fins
o Hood and Glove appropriate for diving conditions as needed for cold water
o Wet or Dry Suit appropriate for the diving conditions as needed for cold water
o BCD, integrated or non-intergraded weight system
o Weight Belt and Weights
o First and Second Stage Regulator with Back-up Secondary Regulator
o If diving “Full Face”, appropriate equipment.
o SPG with Depth and Air Pressure Gauge or a personal Dive Computer
o Underwater Compass
o Dive Knife or a Cutting Device
o Underwater flash light
o Underwater timing device (water proof watch)
o At least one Scuba Cylinders for the Open Water phase of training
o Any additional scuba equipment applicant wants to bring
All students should bring snacks and drinks as needed, Towel, swim suit, sun screen and chair as needed. “Diver’s Log Book” if you want the Instructor to give your credit for the diving portion of the training. Transportation to the dive site is the responsibility of each student. The in-water training portion will be conducted in “Limited to Dark Water” and if time permits in “Current”. During the academic training, students will be furnished with appropriate hand-outs for the course. No books are required to be purchased. At the end of the course a 50 to 100 question exam will be administered requiring an 80% passing score. Students must be at least 18 years old.
