Blue Ridge Community College is proud to present all of the emergency medical classes as directed by the Office of Emergency Medical Services. Please review the certifications that are attached. We offer many certification and non-certification classes in Henderson and Transylvania counties.
Some of the classes offered are Medical Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, EMT-Intermediate, EMT –Paramedic, Basic Anatomy and Physiology, First Aid , CPR and Bloodborne Pathogens.
Anatomy and Physiology for EMS
This course provides a basic study of the structure and function of the human body. The curriculum for Anatomy and Physiology course shall be objectives from Appendix E of the 1998 Release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Paramedic: NSC. Topics include a basic study of the body systems as well as an introduction to homeostasis, cells, tissues, nutrition, acid-base balance, and electrolytes. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of anatomy and physiology. This course is a prerequisite for EMS 3031, Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic Initial.
Medical Responder
This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The Office of EMS must approve courses that include portions delivered via distance education. The curriculum for the MR educational program shall be the 1995 United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) First Responder Course: National Standard Curriculum.
Student Prerequisites: High School diploma or general education development (GED)
Successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum at the tenth grade level
Emergency Medical Technician
This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The curriculum for the EMT educational program shall be the 1994 release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Basic Course: National Standard Curriculum and the Supplemental Airways Modules for EMT-Basic; NSC. The EMT program must be conducted by an approved Basic or Advanced Educational Institution as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. In this course, the student will learn the basics of emergency medical care in the Pre-hospital environment. The student will be exposed to 160 hours of didactic and psychomotor skills. They also will be required to attend at least 20 hours of practical exercise. This class will prepare the student to operate in the pre-hospital environment with or without an affiliation to an emergency provider.

EMT - Intermediate
This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The Office of EMS must approve courses that include portions delivered via distance education. The curriculum for the EMT-Intermediate educational program shall be objectives identified from the 1998 Release of the US Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Paramedic Course: National Standard Curriculum.
Student prerequisites:
1. Successful completion of an EMT- Basic course
2. High school diploma or general education development (GED)
3. Successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension and English skills at a minimum at the post-secondary grade level
4. Demonstration of math skills at a minimum at the high school grade level
EMT-Paramedic
This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The Office of EMS must approve courses that include portions delivered via distance education. The curriculum for the EMT-Paramedic Educational program shall be the 1998 Release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Paramedic Course: National Standard Curriculum. The BRCC Paramedic Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Prerequisites:
1. Successful completion of an EMT-Basic course
2. High school diploma or general education development (GED)
3. Successful completion of an entrance exam assessing Basic reading comprehension and English skills at a minimum at the post-secondary grade level
4. Demonstration of math skills at a minimum t the high school grade level.
Prerequisite course: EMS 3000 Anatomy and Physiology.
Bloodborne Pathogens
This class will provide emergency response personnel with the training needed to meet the requirements for an infection control Policy - NFPA 1581 and the Ryan White Law - Public Law 101-381 and will train personnel for their role to respond to an infection control situation.
Educational Methodology for Emergency Services
This course will provide instruction for personnel who wish to teach fire and EMS subjects. The course material is the IFSTA Fire and Emergency Service Instructor Program. Instructors for this class must be qualified by a committee of three representatives from OSFM, OEMS and NCCCS. This course meets the objectives of NFPA 1041 Level II Standard.
International Trauma Life Support (ITLS)
The International Trauma Life Support Course is designed to increase the knowledge and skill level of the emergency medical technician in assessing and treating any trauma-related injury. Much of the material in this course is not covered in the initial EMT or EMT-P course. It is designed for the student to better recognize possible trauma injuries due to mechanism of injury, better assess the patient and more aggressively treat shock and trauma in general.
Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Providers (PEPP)
The Pediatric Educationfor Pre-hospital Providers (PEPP) is a 14-16 hour course, which presents the scope of knowledge in pediatrics that defines paramedic pre-hospital pediatric practice. It is an ALS course. Therefore, the material assumes a minimum BLS background in pre-hospital pediatric care. Topics include guidelines, self-assessment cases, airway management in children and core pediatric procedures. The skill stations include airway management, vascular access and drug administration, family communication, immobilization and restraint, and newborn resuscitation. PEPP can be used as a basic pediatric education course, or it can be used to compliment and augment the American Heart Association's Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course. This program is coordinated with the NC Office of EMS.
