Firefighter I and II
The student must successfully complete the following classes for this certification. They must also have a high school diploma or general education development (GED) and complete a state application.
FD Organization & Safety Fire Alarms & Communications Fire Behavior Portable Extinguishers Personal Protective Equipment Forcible Entry Ventilation Ropes Ladders Fire Hose, Streams, & Appliances Foam Fire Steams Salvage Overhaul Emergency Medical Care Rescue Water Supplies Sprinklers Response to Haz-Mat/Terrorism Fire Prevention, Education, & Cause Building Construction
These classes account for approximately 402 hours. These classes have not only written certification test at the end, but also include practical application exams.
Rescue Technician
The student must successfully complete the following classes for this certification. They must also have a high school diploma or general education development (GED) and complete a state application.
1. General - Incident Planning 2. General - PPE 3. General - Search 4. General - Helicopter Transport 5. General - Victim Management, Lifts, Carries, Drags & Stretchers 6. General - Ropes, Anchors & Lowers 7. Vehicle & Machinery Rescue - Incident Planning 8. Vehicle & Machinery Rescue - PPE 9. Vehicle & Machinery Rescue - Equipment 10. Vehicle & Machinery Rescue - Extrication 11. Hazardous Materials Awareness & Terrorism 12. Hazardous Materials Operations & Terrorism
These classes account for approximately 171 hours. These classes have not only written certification test at the end, but also include practical application exams.
Aerial Operations
The student must successfully complete the following classes for this certification. They must also have a high school diploma or general education development (GED) and complete a state application.
1. Intro to Aerials 2. Basic Aerial Operations 3. Aerial Maintenance 4. Aerial Testing
These classes account for approximately 60 hours. These classes have only written certification test at the end.
Driver Operator
The student must successfully complete the following classes for this certification. They must also have a high school diploma or general education development (GED) and complete a state application.
1. Emergency Vehicle Driver 2. Intro to Pumps 3. Basic Pumps Operations 4. Pump Maintenance 5. Sprinkler & Standpipes 6. Pump Hydraulics 7. Service Testing 8. Pump Water Supply
These classes account for approximately 130 hours. These classes have not only written certification test at the end, but also include practical application exams.
Fire Life Safety Educator
The student must successfully complete the following classes for this certification. They must also have a high school diploma or general education development (GED) and complete a state application.

These classes account for approximately 108 hours. These classes have only written certification test at the end.
Henderson County Fire and Rescue Rookie Academy
Blue Ridge Community College in conjunction with the Henderson County Fire and Rescue Association is proud to offer our annual fire and rescue academy. This program offers to any student the ability to enter the academy with no experience and leave with a North Carolina OSFM Firefighter I and II certification, North Carolina OSFM Rescue Technician and Chainsaw certification. This program will meet at the Henderson County Fire and Rescue Training Center. All classes will be offered through the program. Any student may enroll in a particular class at the beginning of the class. All students will be required to follow all of the rules and regulations of the academy. If you are interested in this program you may contact our Fire and Rescue Coordinator at 828-694-1789. Many thanks to local Fire Departments for their support of this program.
Rules for Henderson County Fire and Rescue Academy 1. Classes will start at 0800 sharp. If you are not in class at 0800, your chief will be notified 2. All instructors and officers shall be addressed by their rank, i.e. Chief Garland, Captain Barnett, etc. 3. All students will have an Essentials IV in class. 4. No cell phones or pagers to be on or used during class. 5. While in class, no student will leave for any calls. If a student leaves they will receive an unsatisfactory. 6. All students must wear a shirt identifying what department they represent. 7. A student is not allowed to miss more than 10% of any class. 8. All students will take each exam for score, even if they already have the class. 9. All students must maintain a 70% to remain in program, any student with a score of 70 will be given an opportunity to retest within 24 hours of notification. 10. All students will complete all practical exercises for each class. 11. Any outside student not enrolled in the academy will follow all of these rules. 12. Any student found disrupting class will be immediately removed. 13. No tobacco use while in classroom. 14. All students must bring appropriate PPE to class when required.
