Gerontology is "the study of all aspects of the aging process, including the clinical, psychologic, economic and sociologic issues encountered by older persons and their consequence for both the individual and society"( Mosby, 2006).*

Blue Ridge Community College is very pleased to offer the following courses:

Healthy and Integrative Aging

  •   Gerontology : Part I NUR 8249 (4.8 CEUs)

In this course students will be focusing on life management strategies and personal growth issues. This courses also cover the psychological,social, and physicals aspects of aging.

  • Gerontology: Part II NUR 8250 ( 4.8 CEUs)

In this course students will be focusing on trends and issues, biological,psychological,sociological.also the impact of nutrition, leisure,exercise,social engagement and other lifestyles.Anti-aging research,services and resources.

Course Objectives for Gerontology I and II: These are seminar courses which will provide a broad overview of trends and issues in the field of gerontology. It provides an introduction to the various aspects of healthful and integrated living during the aging years. You will be asked to apply the information to your own life and your own aging. You will gain knowledge of the major issues and research findings in the following areas:

  • The field of gerontology—trends and issues
  • Developmental issues—including biological, psychological and sociological
  • The impact of nutrition, leisure, exercise, social engagement and other lifestyle behaviors on quality of life, longevity and fitness
  • Life management strategies and personal growth issues
  • Services and resource

Methods of Instruction:   HYBRID ONLINE-Traditional classroom(  2 Saturdays) and online. Classroom: TBD

Gerontology: A Holistic Approach NUR 8248 (2.4 CEUs possible)

This course is designed to teach the psychological,social, and physical aspects of normal aging ,including dementia and palliative/hospice care.  Each class is a stand-alone class and participants are not required to attend all sessions.  Participants who choose to attend all sessions will earn the full 2.4 CEUs.  Others will earn 0.4 CEUs per session.

Module 1: Aging: Myths and Realities (4 hrs/0.4 CEUs)

Module 2: Healthy & Integrative Aging (4 hrs/0.4 CEUs)

Module 3: Living Environments in Later Life (4 hrs/0.4 CEUs)

Module 4: Alzheimer’s and Other Dementia (4 hrs/0.4 CEUs)

Module 5: Maintaining a Healthy Brain (4 hrs/0.4 CEUs)

Module 6: Death and Dying (4 hrs/0.4 CEUs)
