Constitution Day Events

Faculty and students are encouraged to participate in the following events designed to highlight the anniversary of the ratification of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787.

 

History of the ACLU and Discussion of the
North Carolina Racial Justice Act

Tuesday, September 15

11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Thomas Auditorium

Presented by Alexandra Cury, Western Carolina Campaign Coordinator, NC Death Penalty Moratorium Coalition and board member of the ACLU WNC chapter

An overview of the American Civil Liberties Union and its goals, plus an extended discussion of the recent passage of the N.C. Racial Justice Act, legislation aimed at ending racial bias in the application of capital punishment. The law allows defendants to use statistical data to argue racial bias.

 

Conversations on the Constitution: Freedom of Speech

Thursday, September 17

12 to 1 p.m. in Thomas Auditorium

A DVD featuring Supreme Court Justices Stephen G. Breyer, Sandra Day O’Connor, and Anthony M. Kennedy

 

The Constitution, Habeas Corpus and Human Rights

During the War on Terror

Wednesday, September 30

1 to 2:30 pm in Thomas Auditorium

Presented by Dr. Mark Gibney, Belk Distinguished Professorand Professor of Political Science at University of North Carolina - Asheville

A discussion of his research in the area of human rights and the suspension of habeas corpus, as guaranteed in the Constitution. During the U.S. War on Terror, the federal government denied this right applied to detainees at Guantanamo Bay and CIA “black sites.” Dr. Gibney explores the concept of habeas corpus and its relevance today.
