12 Level Spanish Language Program
BRCC offers a series of 12 levels in Spanish for students with an interest in developing fluency. The program is equivalent to two years of high school Spanish. Each class is eight weeks. The department can place students who have previously studied Spanish at the appropriate level.

 

Beginning Spanish I
This course provides a foundation. Students begin to acquire the skills necessary to speak, read, write, and understand Spanish. This course will include the alphabet, pronunciation, rules of stress and accent. Basics covered include numbers, days of the week, months of the year, parts of the body. Grammar covers personal subject pronouns, conjugation of present tense regular verbs, and common conversational phrases.

Beginning Spanish II
This course continues to build on Beginning Spanish 1 by focusing on vocabulary and teaching basic grammar. Points covered include negative expressions, interrogatives, prepositions, time, and weather, as well as the verb "to be" and expressions using the verb "tener." Prerequisite: Beginning Spanish I or equivalent proficiency.

Beginning Spanish III
This course will continue to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The main points covered include irregular present tense verbs, possessive adjectives, and demonstrative adjectives, as well as numbers and vocabulary related to times, dates, holidays, family, and occupations. Prerequisite: Beginning Spanish II or equivalent proficiency.

Beginning Spanish Conversation
This course is a review of the grammar and vocabulary learned in Beginning Spanish I, II, and III — with a focus on conversation. Items covered include the gender and number of nouns, definite articles, and personal subject pronouns, as well as the conjugation of present tense regular verbs. Prerequisite: Beginning Spanish III or equivalent proficiency.

Intermediate Spanish I
This course builds on the beginning series. Students learn change-stems verbs, as well as commands, adverbs, and topical vocabulary. Prerequisite: Beginning Spanish Conversation or equivalent proficiency.

Intermediate Spanish II
Continue to add to your knowledge of the Spanish language. Direct and indirect objects, 'gustar', 'por' and 'para' and topical vocabulary will be covered. Prerequisite: Intermediate Spanish I or equivalent proficiency.

Intermediate Spanish III
Students practice present and past tense forms of verbs. They learn the present progressive tense, work with reflexive verbs, and study topical vocabulary. Prerequisite: Intermediate Spanish II or equivalent proficiency.

Intermediate Spanish Conversation
In this conversation course, students will add to their knowledge of Spanish through dialogue. Grammar points include direct and indirect objects, the verb "gustar," and topical vocabulary. Prerequisite: Intermediate Spanish I or equivalent proficiency.

Advanced Spanish I
Students focus on the imperfect tense and compare its uses with those of the preterit tense. They also continue learning new vocabulary by topic. Prerequisite: Intermediate Spanish Conversation or equivalent proficiency.

Advanced Spanish II
Students learn the past subjunctive and its uses, as well as other more complex grammatical structures. Reading, writing, and speaking are emphasized. Prerequisite: Advanced Spanish I or equivalent proficiency.

Advanced Spanish III
Review complex structures and more advanced verb tenses. Through reading and writing learn to correct grammar, pronunciation and increase fluency. Prerequisite: Advanced Spanish II or equivalent proficiency.

Advanced Spanish Conversation
Use the grammar, vocabulary and skills learned in all levels of Spanish.  Attention will be given to pronunciation, correct use of idioms and skills needed for fluency.  Prerequisite: Advanced Spanish III or equivalent proficiency.

Destinos Spanish Conversation Program
The Destinos Conversation program uses the Destinos video series and work text. Students learn Spanish by watching videos. They perform listening activities and reading and writing assignments that improve grammar. Discussion and games are in a context-based curriculum.

Spanish Literature & Culture Program
Spanish Literature and Culture is a two-year program. Students read and write Spanish and participate in listening activities, discussions, and games. Grammar is actively improved in a literature-based curriculum.
The introduction class is eight weeks long. Spanish Literature & Culture 1, 2, 3, & 4 are sixteen weeks long each.

Spanish Composition through Literature is a two-year program. Students combine advanced composition and critical literary analysis through reading Spanish literature. Students acquire new vocabulary and grammar as well as reading and writing fluency and participate in listening activities, discussions, and games.

Workplace® Spanish Program
The Workplace® Spanish Program focuses on frequently used terms and expressions encountered in a variety of occupations. Students learn how to ask questions. No prior knowledge of Spanish is necessary. They earn Continuing Education Units (CEU’S), generally 2 units per course. Classes meet one evening per week for two and a half hours for eight weeks.
