Helper Applications - NEEDFUL THINGS!

While every instructor teaches slightly differently online (just as in a classroom), some technologies need to be added to your system in the event you need to view a video clip of a certain type, view a MicroSoft application when you use a MacIntosh, or a host of other possibilities.  In addition to the links on this page, we would like to direct you to:

  1. Our online call center's Knowledge Base .  When you get to the Presidium page, click the link for Students, then continue to search for what you need.
  2. Moodle.org Student FAQ for Moodle 2

To take full advantage of all the features in Moodle, be sure you have the right technology at your fingertips. This includes an up-to-date Web browser, operating system, and appropriate plug-ins. Click the link to the appropriate web sites. Then follow the steps given on the web sites to download the program.  To clarify, you WILL encounter technical barriers to learning if you do not have the following minimum standards.

PLEASE NOTE: You must have reliable access to a computer that you can use for extended and uninterrupted periods of time most days of the week. This information is only for students accessing Moodle from their home computers. Students are not allowed to download any programs or plug-ins onto BRCC computers. The college computers should already have the appropriate files in place.

Browsers

You will need a web browser in order to use Moodle for your online courses. There are four major web browsers available for use, Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Safari.  These browsers are available for both Windows and Macintosh users.  Safari and Firefox are excellent if you use a Macintosh computer. If you are using an older version of a browser that cannot handle advanced features of HTML, then some portions of this course may not work for you and you may have serious problems. We recommend the latest stable (no Beta's please) version of:

Some mention has been made of problems using Safari with "secure quizzes", otherwise, it should work fine. Be sure to download the browser suitable for YOUR operating system.

This link takes you to another college, but the browser test will work on your computer as well, plus there are additional installation links.  Check it out at  - http://www.fgcu.edu/support/browser/

Plug-ins & Players Browsers also use plug-ins and other helper applications to help them display Web documents. If you encounter an element (such as video or animation) that requires one of these helpers, you may see a message that your browser isn't equipped for that content type. The following are common plug-ins, players, and viewers that are used on the Web in general, and that may also be used in this course. BE sure to read Installation instructions and select the FREE versions.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is free, and freely distributable, software that lets you view and print Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files.

Apple QuickTime player is for viewing video in Apple's QuickTime format. Works with over 30 audio, video and image formats.

Macromedia Flash player is for viewing interactive content in various Macromedia formats (used fairly often in Moodle - see if your system will play the Flash content in the Getting Started in Moodle demo course).

Real Player (installation instructions) is for streaming audio and video content.

Microsoft Office 2007 is the college standard software and may be required to view and transfer files to and from your instructor. If you do not have Microsoft Office 2007 installed on your computer, you will need to download one, or more, of the following viewers.
