The Office of Planning, Research, and Institutional Effectiveness is a support function of the College made up of three specific areas:
Planning activities include environmental scanning, conducting focus groups, internal program analysis, strategic plan development, and establishing college goals and outcomes. In addition, the Office assists with grant-writing, report preparation, and special projects.
Institutional research supports planning, policy formation, and decision making. A major focus is the extraction and analysis of student information data that leads to informed decision making. Office research also includes providing critical data to the North Carolina Community College System and to other public and private agencies.
Institutional effectiveness, often referred to as the "IE" function, is the ongoing processes of planning, goal-setting, outcome development, and assessment of both the College as a whole and of each department and program area. The underlying purpose of IE is to continually evaluate every functional area of the institution and use the results to make improvements in educational quality and service to the community.
Taking terms from industry and broadly defined, the Office is a cross between research & development and quality control.
