Session 1: Finding Library Books

Resource: iLink: The BRCC library catalog. The BRCC library is part of a combined catalog of over forty North Carolina community college libraries called CCLINC. CCLINC's catalog, iLink, allows you to search for materials at Blue Ridge or at any other member library, or at all member libraries simultaneously.

Objectives: 1) Learn to identify keywords related to your topic, 2) To understand how to access and use the library catalog, 3) To familiarize you with the Library of Congress Classification System, 4) Understand how to locate books within the BRCC library, 5) Understand how to use your keywords and the Library of Congress Subject Headings manuals to build a search vocabulary.

• Introduction to the library, accessing the catalog, and library computer policies.
• Library catalog demonstration of a basic keyword search.
• Locating books, how Library of Congress Classification works.
• Library checkout policies; title, author and subject searching, how to use Library of Congress Subject Headings for searching.
• Special search techniques for fast searching.

Session 2: Reference Books

Resource: Reference Books at BRCC or another library.

Objectives: 1) Learn what reference books are and where they are located, 2) Learn how to use reference books to find information on a given topic.
