Huskins Program

The Huskins Program allows high school students to take Applied Technology courses at Blue Ridge Community College not available at area high schools. Programs that qualify are:

  • Autobody Repair
  • Automotive Systems Technology
  • Machining  Automotive Restoration (evening)
  • Cosmetology
  • Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration (HVAC)
  • Welding

High school students are NOT allowed to take developmental courses, those listed with a course number less than 100.

Tuition for high school students is waived as long as the student is enrolled at least halftime at the high school (three classes on a traditional calendar or two classes on the block calendar). Early dismissal does not count. Students will purchase books and supplies as required by their program (prices are variable) and pay the fees and insurance.

To apply, please complete the following process:

  1. Application/Permission form for Admission - Please complete the form and return it to your Guidance Office. The form requires signatures of the high school student, parent, and high school principal.
  2. Blue Ridge Placement Testing - Placement testing will be required if you choose to take a course that has an English, Reading, or Math prerequisite, or if you choose to enroll in a competitive Huskins program. Acceptable SAT or ACT scores may exempt you from testing.
  3. Recommendations -- Please use the forms provided in the application packet. One recommendation is required from a high school vocational instructor, the other from a high school core subject teacher (math, English, science, etc...).
  4. High school transcript - Transcripts are required for all Huskins applicants.
  5. Students must be 16 years of age - Any exceptions are determined on a case-by-case basis.
  6. Interview and Registration - Schedule an interview with your Blue Ridge adviser. Lisa Hill will provide you with the contact information for this individual. You can contact your Guidance Office to schedule an appointment to register for your Blue Ridge courses. Lisa Hill will handle the registration process on your high school campus.

High school students must have a good attendance record, satisfactory grades (especially in math and reading), and confirm with the high school counselor that graduation requirements will be met.
