A Plan for the Future
The College's Strategic Plan 2008-2013 includes 24 strategic directions. The following direction shows the College's support for sustainability.
- "Promote environmental awareness and infuse green technologies into all aspects of the College's educational programs, physical plant operations, and planning activities."
John Brooks Williams Endowed Faculty Chair
In July 2009, James Hutcherson was named the College’s first John Brooks Williams Endowed Faculty Chair. James will continue to lead the Environmental Science Technology curriculum program as well as provide expertise and direction for infusing green technologies into other Blue Ridge programs.
Campus-wide Comprehensive Recycling Program
Blue Ridge Community College began a college-wide recycling program for paper, glass, and plastics in Spring 2010. Each building contains accessible recycling containers in strategic areas of each building, for mixed paper and bottles/cans. Facilities personnel pick these up weekly and combine them for pick-up by Henderson County Solid Waste.
Development of policies for purchasing, energy efficiency, and landscaping.
Policies are being created and reviewed that will give guidance for operations to lead Blue Ridge Community College into a sustainable campus.
Community Garden
A spring/summer garden is now underway for faculty and staff to produce food crops. The garden is found above the fire training grounds on the side of College Drive.
