Declaration of Independence
  • 1989 - BRCC policy change prohibited tobacco use inside its buildings.
  • 2006 - A state law gave all North Carolina community colleges the legal authority to adopt policies to make their campuses 100% tobacco-free.
  • National trend had developed making colleges, hospitals, restaurants, and other public places tobacco-free.
  • According to the 2007-2008 NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund Annual Report 17 colleges and universities are tobacco-free in NC.
  • In September 2008, the College's Management Team created an ad hoc committee to generate an implementation plan for a tobacco-free campus.
  • President Obama signed the Family Smoking and Tobacco Control Act (H.R. 1256) into law on June 22, 2009.
  • On August 1, 2009, Blue Ridge Community College became a tobacco-free campus.
  • On January 2, 2010 North Carolina's Smoke-Free Restaurants and Bars Law went into effect.
