Land of Sky Awards Blue Ridge Community College 5K Grant for All-New Laptops

The Land of Sky Regional Council recently awarded a $5,000 BAND-NC grant to Blue Ridge Community College. The funding will be used to purchase seven new laptop computers for its students. The grant comes as part of an initiative by Land of Sky to develop digital plans for Buncombe, Madison, Henderson and Transylvania Counties.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of digital learning has been magnified significantly, and Blue Ridge Community College President Dr. Laura Leatherwood stressed just how crucial a good laptop can be to students.

“Blue Ridge Community College, like many others, finds itself squarely in the midst of a virtual world,” Leatherwood said. “Our students are no different. For many, a reliable laptop may be the one challenge preventing them from completing their education or starting a new career. This gift from Land of Sky and the Institute of Emerging Issues allows Blue Ridge to once again respond to student needs in order to propel them forward to success. On behalf of our students and our entire faculty and staff, thank you, Land of Sky, for your commitment to education.”

Access to this kind of technology is “more important now than it ever has been for our region’s quality of life and competitiveness,” stated Sara Nichols, Regional Planner at Land of Sky Regional Council.
