Blue Ridge Community College is excited to announce that its Practical Nursing Program, a vital newer offering aimed at strengthening the local healthcare workforce, is now accepting applications through August 30. Twenty applicants will be selected for the one-year program that starts with the Spring 2025 semester.

Practical nurses are in high demand across the state, with employment opportunities in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, home health agencies, clinics, and provider offices. This rewarding and essential role plays a significant part in enhancing patient health, quality of life, and overall well-being. The Practical Nursing curriculum at Blue Ridge Community College equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate safety and quality into nursing care, addressing the needs of the holistic individual.

Practical nurses make a tangible difference every day in their communities, and they have never been more needed in our workforce. The Program on Health Workforce Research and Policy at the Cecil G. Sheps Center has forecasted a practical nurse shortage of 50% by the year 2033.

First offered during the Spring 2024 semester, the practical nurse program adds to Blue Ridge’s other nursing options, including Associate Degree Nursing and Nurse Aide. A practical nursing education can be completed in only one year, giving students a fast track into the nursing profession. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) which is required for practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

The application period for the Spring 2025 program is open through Aug. 30, 2024. Those interested in applying can find more information at
