From a young age, Blue Ridge Community College was a part of Mary Treadway’s life. Her mother, Theater Instructor and Chair of Arts and Sciences Jennifer Treadway, has taught at Blue Ridge for almost 25 years, and sometimes brought Mary to campus as a baby. Students would learn from Jennifer while baby Mary amused herself in a playpen. Years later, Mary would one day take one of her mother’s classes as a Blue Ridge student.

“Aside from growing up in the orbit of Blue Ridge, it’s just very affordable and accessible,” Treadway said. “Financial aid is especially great, since so many people fall in that middle ground of not having enough for college but not qualifying for enough assistance elsewhere.”

In December, Mary will graduate with an Associate of Arts Transfer degree. She intends to return for the spring semester though to take some horticulture classes before transferring to study experiential education at Brevard College or Warren Wilson College in the fall of 2025

Treadway praised the Blue Ridge experience and encouraged others to start their education here.

“Blue Ridge has really great events for students,” she said. “I also appreciated getting more attention from teachers than you do at big universities. I especially loved the art teachers.”
