What the Foundation Can Do for the College

In fulfilling its mission, the Foundation provides financial assistance to students through scholarships, a work-study program, and emergency loans and grants; purchases state-of-the-art equipment for use in classrooms; sponsors faculty development through special projects; enables the College to achieve its institutional effectiveness goals; provides start-up costs for new programs; and solicits monies for other projects on campus. Private support through the Foundation enables Blue Ridge Community College to keep pace with the educational changes occurring in its service area and in the lives of its students, faculty and staff, and the citizens it serves.

Even though the Foundation is a separate, legal entity, it serves as a vessel for broadening support for the College through the involvement of its stakeholders who share in the College’s mission and vision.

Ways to Give

Types of Funds

  • Unrestricted Funds: Donors who give an unrestricted gift build maximum versatility into their charitable giving. These resources are most useful to Blue Ridge on a daily basis in response to changing needs and opportunities. Donors entrust the Board of Directors to select the most appropriate allocations.
  • Restricted Funds: A gift may be restricted for a program of study (curriculum or continuing education), library and classroom resources, faculty development, lecture series, opportunities in the arts, innovative grant possibilities, and more.
  • Scholarship Funds: Scholarship funds assist individuals pursuing educational goals and recognize individual excellence. Donors may specify the criteria for scholarship awards.
  • Endowment Funds: Choosing to endow your gift with Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation ensures ongoing annual support in perpetuity. This is made possible through income generated annually from your investment of $25,000 or greater. The minimum donation of $25,000 to establish an endowed fund may be paid in one lump sum or over a period of three years.

By participating in these matching gift programs, donors to Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation can double, and even triple, their contributions.

Most companies with a matching gift program will have guidelines and forms or logins to be followed. Typically, there is a human relations or charitable giving department that works with employees in preparing the proper documentation. Donors often can include retired employees, spouses, or widowed employees as well as currently employed personnel.

In-Kind Gifts

When an individual, business, or organization indicates an interest in donating a gift-in-kind to the College, the Foundation should be notified. If necessary, the Foundation will consult with College faculty and staff to determine if there is a need for the proposed gift.

Neither the College nor the Foundation shall appraise a gift. Values placed on contributions and appraisals offered in support of such values for tax purposes shall be the responsibility of the donor. In order to be deductible, the in-kind donation must be made to Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation with full control and discretion over the disposition or use of the donation.

As Blue Ridge Community College strives to meet the higher education needs of our community, the demands to make sure our students are given the best education possible with real life teaching tools is growing, and so is our need for donations and support to acquire such items.

We are very grateful to our generous donors who, over the years, have donated automobiles, books, audio-visual equipment, and other useful educational tools to Blue Ridge Community College.

Tributes and Memorials

Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation accepts donations made to honor an event or an individual. A gift may honor a wedding anniversary, birthday, religious celebration, or other occasion. This is a loving tribute to the honoree. A memorial gift is an enduring remembrance of love for the family of the deceased.

The Foundation sends a thank you card to the donor and a card to the honoree or family member regarding the gift. The amount contributed is kept confidential. You may mail your check to the Foundation office with details, or call us for more information.
