Dr. Scott Queen welcomed as new Vice President for Economic and Workforce Development at Blue Ridge Community College

Blue Ridge Community College is proud to welcome Dr. Scott Queen as its new Vice President of Economic and Workforce Development.

Originally from Ohio, his family moved to Burlington, NC, in 1983 where he started middle school, and has remained there for 37 years.

Queen is a 1995 graduate of Alamance Community College, where he earned his degree in business computer programming. He then graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a degree in Information Systems, and earned his master’s degree in Information Technology and Management at UNC-Greensboro.

He previously served as an adjunct faculty member and then a full-time faculty member at Alamance Community College in computer information systems. While in that role, he also served as Distance Learning Coordinator.

He next served as Department Head of Business Administration, followed by Dean of Businesses Technologies and finally Executive Vice President. Since May 2019, he has also served as Interim Chief Financial Officer.

While in his role as Executive Vice President at Alamance, Queen earned his doctorate in Higher Education Executive Leadership from Wingate University.

At Blue Ridge, his role will include development, organization, administration and supervision of non-credit and credit programs in Workforce Training, Advanced Technologies, Public Safety and Corporate and Customized Training that are designed to respond to the needs of students, businesses and industries in Henderson and Transylvania Counties.

“Community colleges are vital to economic and workforce development, as companies often look to this essential training resource when evaluating a potential area to locate,” Queen said. “Partnerships are key to this model.”

Queen said the thing that impressed him most about Blue Ridge was the degree to which the College collaborates with local organizations such as K-12, local Chambers of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership and countless others in order to leverage resources.

Blue Ridge President Dr. Laura Leatherwood stated, “We are so happy to welcome Dr. Queen to the Blue Ridge team! We are looking forward to working with him and continuing our College’s mutually beneficial relationship with our local businesses.”

Queen added, “Dr. Leatherwood has assembled a strong leadership team and I am looking forward to contributing to the culture of excellence they have established.”

When not working, Queen enjoys working on small home improvement or landscaping projects. He also enjoys exercising and cooking.

Dr. Queen can be reached at (828) 694-1728 or by emailing him at squeen@blueridge.edu. His office is located in the Sink Building at the College’s Henderson County Campus.
