Brett Anderson chose to study business administration at Blue Ridge Community College to further the family business.

“I knew the decision to study business would play into working at my father’s construction company well,” Anderson said. “All the skills I’ve learned from construction have been really helpful for leadership, understanding how to work with people better.”

Anderson started classes in the fall of 2020 and found his groove in online learning. Since his  construction work is 30 minutes away from the campus, Anderson utilized his time management skills to continue working while taking classes online. He said there were a few tenets to making his schedule work.

“Don’t fall behind. Get ahead, stay ahead, and keep moving forward,” he said.

Anderson gained insight through his classes that has translated into his current and future work.

“The accounting classes were a big benefit,” he said. “I’m able to take that to our construction business and hopefully someday when I’m running the company I’m able to understand all the financials.”

The benefits of his education are not lost on Anderson.

“Higher education – any sort of higher education – is worth it in the long run. It’s improving what you know, and you’re only going to earn more money if you have more education, more skills, more knowledge,” he said.

After graduation, Anderson plans to focus more on the family company with his newly-gained knowledge.
