Training for Pratt & Whitney
New regional employer Pratt & Whitney, a world leader in the design, manufacture, and service of aircraft engines, has endorsed three of the training courses below (Machining Fundamentals, Industrial Maintenance, and Non-Destructive Testing QA/QC) offered by Blue Ridge Community College. Successful completion of one or more of the endorsed courses will provide you with a waiver for the 32-hour pre-employment assessment required by Pratt & Whitney and give you a guaranteed interview providing a pre-screening of your application is complete.
Machining Fundamentals
January 18, 2022 – August 10, 2022

Machining Fundamentals Outcomes:
This Course covers the following learning objectives:
- The basic principles of print reading. Topics include line types, orthographic projections, dimensioning methods, and notes.
- Introduces the care and use of precision measuring instruments. Emphasis is placed on the inspection of machine parts and use of a wide variety of measuring instruments.
- Introduces the concepts and capabilities of both manual and computer numerical control machine tools. Topics include setup, operation, and basic applications.
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to explain operator safety, machine protection, data input, program preparation, and program storage. Safely demonstrate common shop practices and basic machining operations, accurately measure components, and effectively use layout instruments.

Industrial Maintenance

Industrial Maintenance Outcomes:
This Course covers the following learning objectives:
- Introduces the basic principles of automated systems and describes the tasks that technicians perform on the job. Topics include the history, development, and current applications of robots and automated systems including their configuration, operation, components, and controls.
- Basic maintenance fundamentals for power transmission equipment. Topics include equipment inspection, lubrication, alignment, and other scheduled maintenance procedures.
- The necessary techniques to fabricate and assemble basic items common in industrial environments. Emphasis is placed on students being able to create basic items such as frames, guards, supports, and other components commonly used in industry.
Upon successful completion, the student will understand the basic concepts of automation and robotic systems, demonstrate knowledge of accepted maintenance procedures and practices according to current industry standards, and safely fabricate and assemble selected items within specifications.

Certified Logistics Technician

Certified Logistics Technician Outcomes:
This Course covers the following learning objectives:
- Provides students with a foundational knowledge to understand the world of supply chain competencies. Topics include: the global supply chain, logistics environment, safety, and safe equipment operation, material handling equipment, quality control, workplace communication, teamwork and problem solving.
- Provides students with more technical knowledge as it relates to the world of supply chain management. Topics include: product receiving, product storage, order processing, packaging and shipment, inventory control, safe handling of hazardous materials, various transportation modes, customs, dispatch and tracking operations.
- Provides students the knowledge to create and format a spreadsheet, the introduction to formulas and functions, and the basics of creating charts for data.
Upon successful completion, the student will be prepared to fulfill front-line material handling and supply chain logistics.

Non-Destructive Testing QA/QC
- Meets January 18, 2022 – May 17, 2022

Non-Destructive Testing QA/ QC Outcomes:
This Course covers the following learning objectives:
- Introduces Nondestructive Examination (NDE), its benefits, provides a survey of the basic NDE methods, the limitations and advantages. Topics include terms and definitions associated with NDE, the basic approach to the nondestructive form of testing, and examples of industrial applications.
- Correct reading and interpretation of industrial codes and procedures that are common to the nondestructive examination industry. Topics include American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Welding Society (AWS), Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) codes and various industry procedures to familiarize the student with wording, structure, and meaning of governing documents that must be followed.
- Introduces the care and use of precision measuring instruments. Emphasis is placed on the inspection of machine parts and use of a wide variety of measuring instruments.
- Initial training for visual testing (VT) and liquid penetrant testing (PT) in accordance with the requirements set forth by the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) and the National Aerospace Standards (NAS).
Upon successful completion, the student will understand the Nondestructive Examination (NDE) and its benefits, and provides a survey of the basic NDE methods, the limitations and advantages. This program meets the training hours for the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ANST) and the National Aerospace Standards (NAS) for initial training for qualification of both visual testing (VT), and liquid penetrant testing (PT).
