Training for Pratt & Whitney

New regional employer Pratt & Whitney, a world leader in the design, manufacture, and service of aircraft engines, has endorsed three of the training courses below (Machining Fundamentals, Industrial Maintenance, and Non-Destructive Testing QA/QC) offered by Blue Ridge Community College. Successful completion of one or more of the endorsed courses will provide you with a waiver for the 32-hour pre-employment assessment required by Pratt & Whitney and give you a guaranteed interview providing a pre-screening of your application is complete.

Machining Fundamentals   NEW!

Learn a variety of material-working processes common to the machining industry. This course will teach you about the working properties of metals and how to operate machine tools to produce products that meet precise specifications. Non-Destructive Testing QA/QC   NEW!

Nondestructive testing (NDT) is a technique, including group analysis, used to evaluate the properties or determine the structural integrity of a material or component without damaging or impairing the serviceability of the part or system. Industry applications of NDT include a visual examination of bolting, valves, and welds; surface examination of vessels, weld preps, and castings; and volumetric examination of welds, heat exchanger tubing, and fiberglass-reinforced plastics. You will understand/ comply with their role in workplace safety as well as ensure they understand the most common OSHA standards applicable to any manufacturing environment. Advanced Manufacturing

AutoCAD I

Learn the essential skills and basic concepts of design and shape using AutoCAD. This course will emphasize visual concepts using simple drawings, printing, and plotting. The course includes the production and management of 2D and 3D design drawings. Books will be discussed on the first day of class.

Networking for Industry   NEW!

Gain the fundamental network and Internet Protocol concepts such as the OSI model, IP addressing, IP subnetting, IP routing and Ethernet switching, and VLANS. Sheet Metal Fabrication I    NEW!

Learn the basics of sheet metal fabrication through this project-based course. In this course you will be instructed in sheet metal fabrication practices to produce a project that you may take home upon its completion. The following sheet metal practices will be covered: Reverse-Engineering, Material Identification and Selection, Layout, Building from a Template, Bending, Rolling, Shrinking, Stretching, Forming, Punching, Shearing, Riveting, Gluing and Weld Preparation. Learn welding symbols, shop math, and safety procedures through hands-on experience with various types of welding processes. Learning and Loving Watercolor

Introduction to Calligraphy   NEW!

Learn the beautiful art form of calligraphy by becoming proficient in the Chancery Italic style. Gain knowledge in calligraphy tools and usage. Acquire skills in practicing repetitive strokes and working together harmoniously to form letters, sentences, numbers, and punctuation. You will be able to apply the quickly mastered skills to create an original calligraphy work of art. Pastel Painting

Expand your knowledge and skills beyond the Pastel Painting course. You will be encouraged to push your limits to achieve exciting pastel painting skills. You will also learn wet underpaintings with sanded pastel paper in this course.

Sketching without Fear

Learn to draw what you see around you every day. You will be introduced to the pure joy of sketching the world from your unique perspective in this class. We will begin with exercises that teach you how to be observant, non-judgmental, and able to start drawing right away. Bring a pencil, eraser, and sketch pad to your first class. All levels are welcomed.

Escort Vehicle Operator

Start your own business and become a certified Escort Vehicle Operator to escort Oversized/overweight loads. This course provides the certification required by the North Carolina General Statutes for oversize/overweight vehicle escorts. You will learn about the escort driver requirements, skills training, and take the examination. Become a licensed Auto Emission/OBD inspector or renew an existing license. This course meets the training requirements for the Auto Emission Inspection Program administered by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles, License and Theft Bureau. A mechanic must attend an 8-hour emission course and pass a written and hands-on state certification exam administered in this course for both certification and recertification. Develop the fundamental skills required to serve as an entry-level fiber optic cable technician. Network Cable Installation   NEW!

Get introduced to the fundamental principles of structured premise cabling for both copper and fiber optic systems. You will learn about standards and codes for the telecommunications, transmission principles, installation, termination, testing, retrofitting, pathways and spaces, grounding, bonding and protection, fire stopping, and life safety and field coordination. HVAC: Heating and Air Conditioning I

Learn the fundamentals of heating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. In this course, you will learn about safety, tools, principles of heat transfer, piping, electricity, controls, heating system components, and air conditioning systems.
