Fire and Rescue Course Descriptions

Firefighter I and II

The candidate must be at least 18 years of age. Course work may be completed prior, but certification will not be issued until the candidate’s 18th birthday.

The candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent (i.e., GED)

  • TIMS (FIP 7000)
  • Emergency Medical Care (FIP 7001)
  • Mayday/ Safety & Survival (FIP 6413)
  • Hazardous Materials Operations/ Level 1 Responder

Fire & Life Safety Educator (Levels I – III)
The student must successfully complete the following classes for this certification. They must also have a high school diploma or their high school equivalency diploma and complete a state application.

  • Fire & Life Safety Educator I
  • Fire & Life Safety Educator II
  • Fire & Life Safety Educator III
*Students seeking D/O Aerials certifications must take TIMS (FIP 7000 Traffic Incident Management)
 

Fire Instructor
The student must successfully complete the following classes for this certification and meet the requirements set forth by OSFM to become certified. They must also have a high school diploma or their high school equivalency diploma and complete a state application.

  • Fire Instructor I
    • Certified for 3 years in one of the following: Firefighter II, FLSE, Rescuer, Haz Mat Level 1
    • 21 years of age
  • Fire Instructor II
    • Fire Instructor I certified

Fire Officer
The student must successfully complete the following classes for this certification and meet the requirements set forth by OSFM to become certified. They must also have a high school diploma or their high school equivalency diploma and complete a state application.

  • Fire Officer I Requirements:
    • Firefighter Level II certified for 3 years
    • Minimum of Instructor Level I
  • Fire Officer II Requirements:
    • Firefighter Level II certified for 5 years
    • Fire Officer I certified
    • Minimum of Instructor Level I
