Scope and Content

This collection is comprised of a variety of records with the majority of those being digital. There are photographs, casting documents, recordings of shows, flyers, play bills, tickets, and local news article clippings. Almost all the productions have photographs and marketing materials except for two: Our Country’s Good and Frost Bites: An Evening of Robert Frost (Spring 2005).

Biographical History

Blue Ridge Community College started its theatre department in 2000 with Jennifer Treadway as director and primary instructor. It became a cornerstone of their Associate in Fine Arts, specifically as a transfer program. The University of North Carolina Asheville and Western Carolina University showed an interest in the transfer potential of the program from the beginning. Jennifer Treadway also built relationships early on with local theatre groups such as the Jericho Productions, Belfry Players, and the Flat Rock Playhouse to increase student opportunities and community engagement. Students in play production courses produced one play a semester. Blue Ridge students who were not in the theatre department and community members often auditioned for roles, too. Plays covered a variety of topics and time periods, and Katie Winkler, a now retired member of the English faculty who taught at Blue Ridge for decades, often adapted and wrote original plays for the department.
