Blue Ridge Community College hosts Charity Drive for Sharing House on July 15

At a time when community organizations need donations greatly, Blue Ridge Community College is hosting a Charity Drive for Sharing House Transylvania Christian Ministry, Inc. on Wednesday, July 15 from 12 – 4 p.m. at its Transylvania County Campus.

Sharing House serves low-income families (up to 200% above the poverty line) who live in Transylvania County. The organization, which was founded in 1981, offers food and fresh produce, gently used clothes, rent and utility assistance, household goods, camping equipment, hot showers and a safe spot to share stories.

According to its website as of June 2020, Sharing House’s food distribution has increased by 34% due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as people who are recently unemployed seek scarce resources like food and financial assistance.

The organization doesn’t just provide necessities, however, as it also puts residents in touch with crisis assistance programs that help them cultivate solutions to hunger and poverty. Because of this, Sharing House clients are better prepared to deal with future hardships.

Transylvania County Campus Student Services Coordinator Rob Rhodes praised Sharing House for its exemplary reputation within the community and expressed his delight at working with the organization.

“The Sharing House has always gone the extra mile for our students and community over the years,” Rhodes said. “I know they are a critical resource for those seeking assistance during this unprecedented time. It’s our pleasure to help them!”

Sharing House is requesting the following donations during the upcoming Charity Drive: toilet paper, paper towels, liquid dishwashing soap, laundry detergent, diapers and shelf-stable food such as vegetable oil, flour, sugar, canned goods, etc.

The Charity Drive takes place at 45 Oak Park Dr. Brevard, NC 28712. For more details, contact Rhodes at (828) 694-1905.
