In middle school, Jessica Jayachandran was unsure Henderson County Early College would be a good fit for her. Now as she prepares to go to North Carolina State University in the fall, she is glad to go in having already obtained an Associate of Science degree while in high school.

“It’s honestly been a great experience. I’ve loved having community college classes,” she said. “It’s really helpful being able to understand how a college class would work so that when I go into college I’ll be prepared for that.”

Jayachandran especially liked the small classroom sizes and the specialized learning that it provides. She also said taking online courses at the College helped her succeed in earning her associate degree.

“I definitely like the format of online classes so you can work at your own pace,” Jayachandran said. “Me personally, I love to email my instructors and ask them if I could work a little bit ahead, because when I’m ahead, I know what to expect. So if I have other class work to do, I’m caught up in my online classes already.”

This fall Jayachandran embarks on her journey of studying for her Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science at North Carolina State University. With many of her general education requirements out of the way, she is ready to jump into the study of the rapidly expanding field.

“Taking community college classes in high school is more manageable than going straight into college after high school,” Jayachandran said. “Starting college is hard, so if you want a slightly smoother beginning, it’s a really good option.”
