If you have a passion for enriching young people’s lives, influencing the next generation and desire to become a teacher in elementary, middle or high school, a career in Teacher Preparation may be your calling. This rewarding career path is vital to growing our future and cultivating our society. Find fulfillment and purpose through our Associate in Teacher Preparation Degree Pathways today.
Blue Ridge’s Associate in Teacher Preparation degree programs will give you a running start toward your future as a teacher. Our Teacher Preparation pathways are designed as transfer degrees for those wanting to teach kindergarten through twelfth grade, and they include both Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees. These degrees are designed to be “2+2” transfer degrees, that is, two years at Blue Ridge Community College earning your associate’s degree, plus an average of two years at a university to complete your bachelor’s degree in teaching elementary, middle or high school.
Thanks to key partnerships with local school systems in Henderson and Transylvania County, the path to becoming an educator is more effective and affordable than ever. For example, Henderson County Public Schools’ (HCPS) three-course Teaching as a Profession (TaaP) program helps high school students learn and apply new skills while earning credits transferable toward Blue Ridge’s Education programs. Combined with Blue Ridge’s Career & College Promise program where high school students take additional education courses on their high school campus, a student can complete more than half of an associates degree before their high school graduation day. Combined with possible eligibility for Blue Ridge scholarships and HCPS’ Grow Your Own scholarship for future teachers – as well as Blue Ridge’s credit transfer agreements with institutions across North Carolina – students have a path to becoming an educator that is a more affordable and attainable path than ever.
Teacher Preparation graduates are prepared to plan and implement developmentally appropriate programs in education settings. All education programs have articulation agreements with four-year schools where graduates can continue their studies in either Elementary Education, Secondary Education or Special Education programs. As a full-time student, these programs can typically be completed in two years and offers students the ability to take a major portion of the programs online.
Blue Ridge Community College students who complete either the Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation or the Associate in Science in Teacher Preparations can transfer with junior status into teacher education programs at public universities in North Carolina. This agreement also applies to schools that participate in the Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA).
Students enrolling in these programs must meet specific emotional, behavioral, physical, and cognitive standards. This information is found in Technical Standards. Students qualifying for special accommodations to these standards must contact Student Accessibility Services at (828) 694-1813 for more information.
Financial Aid is filled with resources to help you figure out how to pay for your Blue Ridge Community College education. Please see how to get started at “Applying for Financial Aid.” Additionally, the Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation offers a wide range of scholarship opportunities.
