HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. – ‘Free College’ scholarships are now available to new and returning Blue Ridge Community College students through the 2023 summer and fall semesters, the College announced today. Through the extended Brighter Futures ‘Free College’ scholarship program, Blue Ridge will waive all costs for tuition, fees and books to college-eligible students who desire to begin or continue their education, including adults with some college; adults with no college; recent high school graduates; dual-enrolled high school students; and career-changers.
“We know that the rising costs of higher education are a significant barrier to many in our community who are ready to improve themselves and their careers,” said Dr. Laura B. Leatherwood, president of Blue Ridge Community College. “When we allow our citizens to gain the skills and knowledge needed for successful careers, we are promoting the health of all the families and businesses they serve. This transformative effect cannot be overstated, and Blue Ridge Community College is proud to be a leading force in both workforce development and life transformation through education.”
The Brighter Futures scholarship program began during the 2021-22 academic year, and since its inception has served about 3,200 students with $4.7M of financial support. Last year, a $2M anonymous donation propelled the program through its second academic year, and over 4,100 students earned credentials through curriculum and workforce development programs college-wide. The tuition-free financial aid packages are made possible by generous donations through the Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation, state and federal funding, and grants.
“Thanks to the Brighter Futures scholarship offered by Blue Ridge, I was able to continue my education despite financial hardship,” said Joey Bartles, a second-year automotive technology student on the College’s Transylvania County Campus. “The application was easy to complete, and Blue Ridge’s admissions counselors were very helpful.”
To qualify for the extended Brighter Futures scholarship, students must
- complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using Blue Ridge’s code, 009684,
- complete steps for Blue Ridge Community College admissions, including completion of North Carolina’s residency determination process,
- apply for BRCC Foundation Scholarships through the College,
- and remain in good academic standing.
Some students may be eligible for assistance with child care, supplies, and transportation expenses. Current Blue Ridge students or those who have applied in the last year do not need to submit a new application for the summer semester. They may simply register for classes (if they have not done so) and complete the 2023-2024 FAFSA. Students attending in the fall semester will need to reapply for scholarships at www.blueridge.edu/paying-for-college/scholarships.
“As always, our admission counselors are ready to assist and help students begin this exciting new chapter of their education and lives,” added Leatherwood. For more information, visit www.blueridge.edu/free-college or call 828-694-1800.
