Blue Ridge Community College proudly announced its 2025 Employee Award winners on Monday, December 2, 2024, during a series of live-streamed videos on the College’s Facebook and YouTube platforms. The awards celebrate the dedication, passion, and excellence of faculty and staff who uphold the College’s mission of fostering student success and workforce development.
This year’s award recipients have made remarkable contributions to the college community, exemplifying leadership, innovation, service, and commitment to well-being.
The awards, presented by the Educational Foundation of Blue Ridge Community College in partnership with the Human Resources Dept., recognize the exceptional contributions of faculty and staff.
“Through the generosity of donors, the annual faculty and staff awards honor those who go above and beyond, fostering a vibrant academic community that inspires both learners and colleagues alike,” explained Trina Stokes, executive director of the Educational Foundation. “This year, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the award recipients, who enrich our college and leave a lasting impact on our students’ lives. Your achievements are a testament to the profound difference you make, and we are proud to support and celebrate your remarkable efforts.”
On Monday, Blue Ridge leaders made surprise announcements to inform winners of their recognition led by Stokes, President Dr. Laura B. Leatherwood, and Human Resources Director Lorri Allison.
“Our 2025 Employee Award winners represent the very best of Blue Ridge Community College,” said Dr. Leatherwood. “Through their leadership, innovation, and commitment to student success and personal growth, they strengthen both our college community and the state’s workforce. I am proud to extend my heartfelt congratulations to this year’s honorees.”

Dr. Laura B. Leatherwood Excellence in Leadership Award:
Brenda Blackburn, Dean of Business & Service Careers
The Leatherwood Leadership Award was established by Dr. Laura B. Leatherwood in 2023 to recognize exceptional leadership in providing extraordinary services, activities, or other initiatives that benefit Blue Ridge Community College.
Brenda Blackburn’s exceptional leadership shines across all three campuses. Known for her accessibility, guidance, and unwavering support, she leads with love and dignity, whether navigating crises like Hurricane Helene or fostering collaboration during challenging times. Brenda’s ability to prioritize growth, understanding, and the well-being of faculty, staff and students has made her an indispensable part of Blue Ridge Community College.
Dr. and Mrs. William D. Killian Outstanding Teacher Award:
Tonya Stephens, Information Technology Instructor
The Dr. and Mrs. William D. Killian Outstanding Teacher Award recognizes a faculty member’s commitment to teaching excellence.
Tonya Stephens has transformed Blue Ridge’s AI and cybersecurity programs, growing enrollment by over 50% and inspiring students to achieve incredible milestones. Her inclusive and supportive teaching style empowers students, while her enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology makes her an invaluable mentor. Stephens’ impact is evident in her students’ achievements and her program’s success.
Dr. David W. Sink Jr. Community Service Award:
Rey Castillo, Jr., American Sign Language Instructor
Initiated through an endowment fund set up by the second president of Blue Ridge Community College, this award is presented to a Blue Ridge Community College employee who provides exceptional service to the community, a trait that Dr. David W. Sink values greatly in his own life.
Rey Castillo, Jr. exemplifies the spirit of service through his tireless commitment to students and the broader community. From championing deaf education and accessibility initiatives to volunteering as a high school basketball referee and documenting hurricane recovery efforts, Castillo’s resilience and compassion inspire everyone around him. Despite personal challenges, his dedication to making a difference remains unwavering.
Dr. Eliza B. Graue Extra Mile Award:
Rachel Meriwether, Horticulture Instructor
Dr. Eliza B. Graue, former president of the Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation Board of Directors, established an endowment in 1990 to fund an annual faculty recognition award. An educator herself, she wanted to provide special recognition to an instructor who has in some special way touched the lives of students at Blue Ridge Community College.
Rachel Meriwether’s passion for horticulture and her students is unparalleled. She has revitalized the Horticulture Club, provided extra help to students in need, and supported them through challenges. Meriwether’s engaging teaching style and dedication to creating opportunities for her students both inside and outside the classroom exemplify her commitment to going the extra mile.
Dr. Molly A. Parkhill Staff Person of the Year:
Jonathan Grunder, Director of Financial Aid
Established by the third president of Blue Ridge Community College, the Dr. Molly A. Parkhill Staff Person of the Year Award recognizes a full-time staff member for individual achievement and exceptional contributions to Blue Ridge Community College.
Jonathan Grunder’s dedication to helping students access financial aid ensures that finances are never a barrier to success. His approachable demeanor, innovative problem-solving, and commitment to continuous improvement have streamlined financial aid processes for both students and staff. Grunder’s tireless efforts make him an invaluable member of the Blue Ridge team.
Wellness Award:
Emily Gill, Marketing & Communications Specialist
Employee wellness has long been a priority for Blue Ridge Community College and presents an annual recognition to a deserving employee participating in the College’s wellness program to meet their goals.
Emily Gill is a champion of wellness, earning this award through the college’s point-based system. She’s an avid walker, an active participant in the Wellness Book Club, and a leader in promoting healthy lifestyles. Gill’s dedication to well-being is matched by her contributions as a member of the marketing and storytelling team, where her kindness and empathy shine.
