Why Civil Engineering Technology?

Civil engineering is a rewarding, fast-paced and high-demand field that is critical for building and maintaining the foundations of modern life. Civil engineering technicians work with civil engineers to help plan, build, and design residential, commercial, land development projects and industrial infrastructure. These projects can include highways, bridges, wastewater, and utilities.

The Civil Engineering Technology program provides relevant coursework which includes instruction in the communication and computational skills required for materials testing, structural testing, field and laboratory testing, site analysis, estimation, project management, plan preparation, hydraulics, environmental technology, and surveying.

Graduates should qualify for technician-level jobs with both public and private engineering, construction, and surveying agencies.

Transfer Pathways

Students interested in a four-year degree in engineering should consult a faculty advisor about the Associate in Engineering Program at Blue Ridge Community College. This program allows students complete up to two years of coursework toward a bachelor’s degree at Blue Ridge Community College, then transfer to a four-year college or university in North Carolina with an engineering program.

Mission:

A course of study that prepares students to use basic engineering principles and technical skills to carry out planning, documenting and supervising tasks in sustainable land development and public works and facilities projects. Includes instruction in the communication and computational skills required for materials testing, structural testing, field and laboratory testing, site analysis, estimating, project management, plan preparation, hydraulics, environmental technology, and surveying. Graduates should qualify for technician-level jobs with both public and private engineering, construction, and surveying agencies.

Program Educational Objectives:

Graduates will possess leadership qualities, high morals, and professional ethics.
Graduates will possess the skills to perform at a technician level and be employable in a field related to their program
Graduates will be prepared for increasing levels of responsibility, learning new skills, and adapting to changing technology in the workplace
Graduates choosing to continue their education in a four-year engineering technology program will perform satisfactorily in such programs

Student Learning Outcomes:

Perform and evaluate common civil engineering tests
Produce accurate engineering reports to industry standards
Identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems by applying the principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
Accurately interpret plans and specifications
Perform all work safely per established industry standards.
